There is still a healthy market in Australian manufacturing but you have to be able to innovate, according to Sydney-based aircraft components manufacturer Quickstep.

The ASX-listed carbon fibre manu­facturer yesterday signed a $US139 million ($148m) deal to deliver components for the F-35 Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter to the US.

Under the deal Quickstep, which operates out of Bankstown Airport, will manufacture about 700 sets of composite parts for the vertical tails of the fighter jets, delivering them to US-based Marand Precision Engineering over the next 14 years.
