WHILE Australian manufacturing struggles, highly specialised local companies with cutting-edge defence technology are winning major contracts worth hundreds of millions of dollars and with the potential for billions more.

In a suburb of Canberra, one company has designed a world-beating way for warships to shoot down the most deadly incoming supersonic missiles and another, at Bankstown airport, is “baking” parts for the world’s most ­advanced aircraft in a giant autoclave.
